Tillandsia usneoides syn Spanish Moss or ‘Air plant’

Tillandsia usneoides or Spainish Moss.

A species of many forms. It is commonly known as Spanish moss. Very much sought after by collectors, florists and orchid growers, it is also popular with many people as they might have seen in on sunny holidays to places like Florida, central America and Mexico. Its long, hanging, rootless strands can reach up to 8m long! The small flower is single, with yellow green petals and flared tips. It enjoys bright, sunny and humid conditions.

Tillandsia are members of the bromeliad family and are found growing as epiphytes all over South America, they are also called “Air Plants” . They thrive in humid environments like terrariums but equally can be grown in the home in humid areas like kitchens or bathrooms. If growing in the home they can be misted or soaked a couple of times a week. Once sprayed or soaked, shake off excess water to prevent rotting. Ideally, rain water is best for this.
